Blue Mountains Drive – 21 July 2013

July 22, 2013 10:47 pm

Another month, another sparrow’s fart drive. With snow forecast down to 600 metres, the convertible options looked unfavourable but we risked it and were rewarded with no precipitation, clear blue skies and refreshing mid-winter bite in the air.

With the remnants of the previous night’s pizza still digesting, we assembled at McDonalds just off the M4. Several dodgy espressos later, we were off into the darkness in a multi-continental cacophony of 4-cylinder engine noise. But not before the first mechanical whoopsie of the day – the 340R’s lights were left on, draining the battery and requiring a jump start.

Cruising the M7, we were in Richmond in no time and started our ascent of Bells Line of Road through Kurrajong and Bilpin, the same route written about by Wheels magazine not long ago.

The first turn-off was towards the picturesque garden suburb of Mount Wilson, with a short but interesting section, the surface of which challenged the sports suspension of most cars here.

I doubled back for some action shots around the hairpin, with varied levels of commitment to the corner displayed by the group.

Back onto the BLoR, we were shortly at the top of the famous descent to the township of Lithgow: 4 glorious sweeping corners on smooth-as-silk bitumen, leaves you begging for more as you enter Lithgow. A decent breakfast spread was consumed, followed by a push-start of the 340R down the main street – lucky it only weighs 700kg wet!

Post-bacon and eggs, we headed for the best section of road of the day – Lithgow-Tarana. This road provided all manner of corners and a serious, straight hill ascent enabling one to WOT through a few gears.

Stopping in Tarana to regroup and ponder our favourite parts, I swapped cars with Rob – I got to drive the 340R for the rest of the day!

To be continued…
