Lotus 340R

Belated welcome to the AF garage but one of our favourites so far – the Lotus 340R.

Collected from Melbourne on trailer-back, on a quick weekend jaunt in January 2012, the original owner imported it from the UK along with his limited edition Lotus 7 and BMW 850i. He’d decided to get into 4x4ing so was selling off the less practical toys. He’d owned it since new and done a few laps of UK/Europe with it, even taking in the Stelvio Pass on one trip.

These shots were taken shortly after she arrived back in Sydney and was cleaned up.

A major detail and paint correction was undertaken by Rob, and various parts of the interior were repainted or replaced.

Her first major outing was a weekend run in the Blue Mountains in mid-2013 with the broader AF contingent, taking in freezing cold conditions and even snow at one point.

This was my first opportunity to really explore the 340R in its natural habitat and, wow, I’ve never driven anything like it. The steering is perfectly weighted, direct and the feedback is immense. Its minimal weight aids the responsiveness of the highly strung, naturally aspirated VHPD K-series engine and it writhes smoothly around bends, compliant and comfortable, yet razor sharp in its accuracy.

After driving her properly, it’s clear to see why EVO UK magazine revere it so highly, placing it at #2 in the Greatest Drivers’ Cars of All Time article.

Snow and topless motoring? Fun!

More recently, in 2014 we dragged her out for a couple of early Sunday mornings at Sydney Automobile Club’s Cars & Coffee event, where we’ll be planning to take her again next year.

We even braved the rain one weekend for Cars & Coffee and got totally drenched in the process – well worth it though!

Plenty more to come in 2015, hopefully with some more Sunday drives and many more events attended. Until then…
